BLACK FAMILY TECHNOLOGY AWARENESS CAMPAIGN (BFTAC)
GET INVOLVED! - MAKE A DIFFERENCE!
History: In its continuing leadership role in closing the Digital Divide, IBM is sponsoring the sixth Black Family Technology Awareness Campaign (BFTAC) February 13-19, 2011 in partnership with Career Communications Group.
BFTAC is a public awareness campaign to communicate the value of technology in the Black community and its importance in educating and preparing Black children for future careers.
From national to international
This year, in addition to the hundreds of hands-on demonstrations, computer classes, technology fairs and online college expos taking place across the U.S., the initiative is being expanded globally, providing tens of thousands of people with opportunities to access technology and enhance their technological skills in Sao Paolo, Brazil, Johannesburg and Toronto.
"As the world's largest information technology provider, IBM has taken a leadership role in trying to ensure that people from all backgrounds have access to innovative information technologies and resources," says Phil Thompson, vice president, Emerging Markets, and a BFTAC co-chair.
"Six years ago, we strongly believed that BFTAC could rally those forces in the community that would inspire and empower Blacks to take advantage of the opportunities technology presents, and it is exciting to see that happening now in the U.S. and on an international scale," he adds.
Thompson is one of five senior IBM Black executives who will serve as national BFTAC chairpersons, crisscrossing the country to attend events and address some of the issues critical to persuading Blacks to participate more fully in the Digital Age. The others include:
- Rod Adkins, vice president, development, Systems and Technology Group
- Dr. Sandra Johnson, senior technical staff member and chief technology officer, global small and medium business, Systems and Technology Group
- Lauren States, vice president, technical sales and customer deployment, Software Group
- Al Zollar, general manager, Tivoli Software, Software Group
BDPA Cleveland has participated for 4 of the 6 years by hosting Technology Fairs at Harvard Community Service Center, Career Networking events, Computers 101 workshops at Tri-C Corporate College, and gave away 25 computers at a Technology Fun Day at The Word Church.
